Natural Disaster Preparedness

Tornadoes, hurricanes, and earthquakes, as well as other natural disasters, arise suddenly, and even though it’s important for all of us to have an emergency plan ready to go, it’s particularly important for aging parents, who may be challenged with mobility or chronic health concerns. Since September is National Preparedness Month, it’s the perfect opportunity to ensure the seniors you love are equipped and prepared with a natural disaster preparedness plan. Taking these three steps is a great starting point.

  • Develop an emergency plan. This should consist of assigning a primary person (or multiple people) who can be responsible for checking in on the older adult during an emergency, and who will then relay that information to the senior’s loved ones. Create a list of contact information for every single person who must be informed, and then make sure each person has a copy of the list. The plan should likewise lay out an evacuation protocol, and who will assist the senior with evacuating the property if required.
  • Put together an emergency supply kit. The CDC recommends the following items be stored together in an easily-accessible location for usage in the event of a crisis:
    • Water, nonperishable groceries (including pet food if applicable), and medications to last for a minimum of three days
    • Flashlight and additional batteries
    • First aid kit
    • Manual can opener
    • Hand-crank or battery-powered radio
    • Blanket or sleeping bag
    • Change of clothing
    • Wet wipes, paper towels, and hand sanitizer
    • Copies of important paperwork in a waterproof container (see below)
    • Fire extinguisher
  • Assemble important documents. In a crisis, the very last thing you will want to do is scramble to find necessary paperwork. Put copies of the following paperwork in a waterproof box or bag:
    • Information regarding medical needs and history, medications taken, medical care providers, etc. (the CDC has furnished this easy template)
    • Insurance cards and photo ID
    • Will, living will, power of attorney, etc.
    • List of any food and/or medication allergies
    • Contact information for family members and friends who should always be informed during a natural disaster
